My first ever Beauty Box arrived neatly wrapped in green tissue paper and tied with a yellow ribbon……
A little bit of nostalgia to begin with…..
Evolve’s African Orange Aromatic Wash and Fresh Face Facial Wash
One of my very first blog posts in July 2016 featured Evolve Organic Beauty……you can read it here. I was very excited to have found a small-batch, UK based, cruelty-free company and I’m a big fan of their chocolate Radiant Glow Mask 💆🍫
Both of these beauties are perfectly-sized for taking on mini-breaks/weekends away and have become staples in my gym bag over the past couple of weeks. The papaya and goji facewash is perfect for a quick refresh after a run/spin class when I don’t have the time or room in my bag for my usual daily products and my main priority is clearing sweat from my pores to prevent breakouts (and cooling down my tomato-red face- it should be obligatory to have the lights off in every spin class!) 🍅🙈 It’s fresh and gentle leaving no tightness, smells great and you only need a small amount to achieve a squeaky-clean face.
The orange wash gives an energising, citrusy-fresh kick post-workout with a touch of earthy cedarwood and black pepper for warmth. This will also be living in my gym bag! 🏃
The Naked Soap (Aloe Vera and Avocado), handmade by Crafting with Beth
Since transitioning to cruelty-free 🐰, the majority of our shower gels and liquid hand soaps have been Co-op/ Morrisons own brand. Mr Bee suffers from skin allergies, occasionally requiring short courses of topical steroids, so I’ve felt guilty for continually buying cheaper products that probably don’t give his skin the care it needs.
As soon as I untied the yellow ribbon, I picked out this soap and handed it to him with an apologetic look! 💛
He’s a man, he’s not going to gush enthusiastically about how much he loves it, but the simple, natural ingredients are much kinder to his skin and I can tell he appreciates the change.
I’m thinking of replacing all of our liquid soap (also own brand from Co-op, Sainsburys and Superdrug) with bars of soap as they last longer and tend to be less drying 👏
Citrus Natural Deoderant by Earth Conscious
Ingredients: Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Arrowroot, Organic Shea Butter, Sodium Bicarbonate, Beeswax, Organic Orange Oil, Organic Lemon Oil
This was the most intriguing item in the box and I so wanted to like it, especially as it won the award for Best Natural Deoderant UK in 2016 (from Green Parent Magazine)🏆 But as much as I love everything Earth Conscious stand for…….it just didn’t work for me.
Terre Verdi’s FranChouliPom Facial Serum
(Frankincense, Patchouli, Pomegrante)
I was so impressed to discover this in the box! 🙌 I’ve heard great things about Leaping Bunny certified Terre Verdi and this is their award-winning, best-selling serum, normally retailing at £27! If you read about my 5 day Fresh Start Challenge, you’ll know that I’m new to the world of oils and serums, so I’m going to be completely honest and say that the fact this is designed for dry/mature skin made me nervous!
I checked the comedogenic ratings of the main oils in the serum (with 0 = does not clog pores, 5 = high chance of clogged pores) and these are the ratings most sources tend to agree on:
Argan oil 0 (does not clog pores, lightweight, absorbed easily)
White Tea seed oil 1 (very slight chance of clogged pores)
Pomegranate seed oil 1 (very slight chance of clogged pores)
Jojoba oil 1-2? (some sources say it’s completely non-comedogenic, some say it may initially cause a purge in oily skin)
My plan was to use this serum in place of my newly-discovered holy grail: hemp oil, 2 or 3 nights each week as a little extra skin-nourishment 🌿 So far it’s going really well, it absorbs in quickly and I don’t wake up in the morning with super-shiny skin like I used to with my old oil-free moisturisers…..my skin is soft and smooth 💆
I guess I need to take into consideration that although I may still be prone to hormonal break-outs, I’m also in my thirties now, and anti-aging is something I need to be thinking about too- it’s all about finding the right balance for my crazy skin type!
If you have oily skin and you’re thinking of trying a serum but don’t want to jump straight in with FranChouliPom, Terre Verdi also stock a serum specifically for oily/combination skin, Herbs & Trees
Greenfibres Organic Cloth/Flannel
The simplest things are often the best…..I wish I’d gotten one of these sooner! I’d been using a flannel: heavy, can be quite rough, takes forever to dry.
The beauty of this multi-tasking cloth is that one side has a netted texture so is great for mild exfoliation while cleansing or removing masks, while the reverse is super-soft so kind and gentle enough for the most sensitive skin. It’s also lightweight and dries much more quickly, making it more hygienic. I’m throwing my flannels out and stocking up on more of these 🖒
Overall January’s ‘Rise and Shine’ was a really strong first box- it pleased Mr Bee🐝, introduced me to new UK brands, added to old favourites and expanded my knowledge of oils. I genuinely cannot wait to see what beauties arrive in February’s ‘Kissed by the Ocean’ box 💙💦🐳
